Transitioning to a net zero economy
We’re actively taking steps to accelerate the just transition to a net zero emissions economy, one that supports the regeneration of the natural environment, by:
- committing $10 billion in sustainable finance by 2025
- Enable our SME customers to measure and reduce their emissions
- aligning our lending portfolios with pathways to net zero emission by 2050.
Delivering on our commitments
Supporting customers
We’re working with our customers to provide sustainable finance options to support their transition plans and have helped develop a free, digital tool – the Climate Action Toolbox to help businesses take action on their carbon footprint.
Taking action on climate
We’re committed to understanding and reducing the risk that climate change poses to our customers and communities. Our 2024 Climate Statements (PDF 6.3MB) outlines our approach to climate risk and discloses our current metrics and targets.
Greening operations
We’re actively taking steps to reduce our own footprint. To ensure we’re in line with global best practice, we:
- hold Toitū net carbonzero certification (PDF 239KB)
- hold Toitū Enviromark Diamond certification for our Environmental Management system
- work with suppliers who share our values.

We believe it’s important advocate and actively participate in the advancement of sustainable business practice. We’ve made a number of public commitments to sustainability and are working hard to deliver on these.

- We’re committed to the United Nations Principles of Responsible Banking and RE100.
- We’re a partner of Toitū Tahua: Centre for Sustainable Finance.
Regenerating the natural environment
Through BNZ Foundation we’re working with organisations to support the regeneration of the natural environment. The Manaaki Taiao grant funds initiatives that help to protect and restore nature for the long-term.

We’re aligning our lending decisions to meet positive social, environmental, and governance goals.
